Step Back to the 1950s

Step Back to the 1950s
Welcome to the first article of the new Take Me Back series. Step back to the 1950s, and take a journey to an adventurous time in fashion. Although it wasn’t quite as volatile as the ‘60s, it was a time of great change. By the time the war was over and the economy had picked up ladies got more excited about how they looked. Society as a whole was spending more on things like clothing. It was a great time in our history. This was also a time of getting more teenagers to pay attention to what they wore. Teens began to attend proms in the high school gyms during this decade. Prom and other formal gowns were designed with this age group in mind for the first time in earnest.

While marketing to teens was fairly new, marketing to their mothers was not. During this really fun time, mothers and daughters could shop together. Many were seen wearing similar or even matching dresses to events. The little black dress was invented in the 1920s but really was a must have by the 1950s. I have one in my closet as I am sure most of us do. This is what the little black dress of the '50s looked like. Notice the short sleeves and pulled in waistline. It is a bit different than mine, but the Dame Noir was a very popular style. And vintage is always in fashion. This is just one of a few pieces that are all time favorites and downright classics are still sought after today. Here are a few dresses from the WardrobeShop.com that seem to have come right out of the end of the 1950s.

When you step back to the 1950s, what do you think about when you think of this era? I think about actresses like Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, and Elizabeth Taylor. I think about Elvis Presley and how Rock and Roll influenced a wild change in life. I think of the hemlines getting shorter and shorter as the decade wears on. The 1950s wasn't entirely a beautiful decade though. There was a lot of turmoil, especially through the mid part of the era. Beatnik who didn't conform to social expectations, civil rights disturbances, and gay rights marches made for a tough end the the time period. It was a time of re-flux, you could say. But, through it all, the 1950s is still thought of as one of the greatest times to have been alive. Those who grew up during this time are sure to agree with that statement and those that didn't can only trust that we missed out.
